Discovery Year 7. Session 7. Week 2.

This week, Discoverers continued to hone in on their end-of-year goals and find joy in challenges.

Writers’ Workshop

Session 7 is full of reflection, and Writers’ Workshop is no exception. Discoverers are taking time to review their whole year, considering challenges, successes, and growth. This week, they focused on their relationships by honoring friends and mentors with poetry, and considering new friends by writing a letter to future Discoverers.

Growing Curiosity

The Explorers came into the studio this week to lead the studio through a true rite of passage: LEGO stop-motion animation! Discoverers were challenged to write their scripts, snap photos of their LEGO sets, and compile the images with a voice-over to create their film. On Friday, Discoverers showed grace and patience as Explorers did some on-the-spot problem solving to try to bring the film together.

World Cup Inspiration

The FIFA World Cup started this week, and Discoverers drew inspiration from that energy in many ways. In PD, Discoverers are competing in a World Cup of their own, and learners are spending free time and outdoor play time practicing their soccer skills as well. The World Cup has also inspired learners inside the studio. This week, they dove into a discussion about their end of year visions. They reflected on whether their “first tough” last week was  calm and controlled or if they lost the ball a little bit. After identifying how their first touch with their session-long goals went, they considered how they could stay on top of the ball or regain control. To celebrate, Discoverers watched the opening moments of Game 1: Mexico v. South Africa! Games that overlap with studio time will continue to be screened this session.

Next week, Discoverers continue to pursue excellence and joy!
