Discovery Year 7. Session 7. Week 3.

In our abbreviated week, Discoverers worked hard to get the most out of their time.

Typing Time

In response to a Town Hall slip, Typing Time was added to the Discovery schedule this week. Using TypingClub, Discoverers are spending intentional time practicing their typing skills, with an emphasis on posture, hand placement, and accuracy, because as one Discoverer pointed out, “perfect practice makes perfect.” Discoverers engage with skills like typing from a viewpoint of independence. The longevity of this skill is unknown, but being able to type competently allows for increased levels of independence, both in how a person interacts with tech and in how independently a person’s thoughts flow when using typing skills.

Growing Curiosity

This week’s Explore-led mini-quest was comics! Pairs or trios of Discoverers spent the week creating characters and writing comic books. The challenge was to create at least two chapters, constituting eight to ten pages.

Socratic Discussions

Learners engaged in powerful discussions this week while focusing on their provisional ROE, building on each other’s points. They elevated conversations by focusing on which aspects of a fellow traveler’s point they agreed with or disagreed with, then followed up with their reasoning. Some questions that got a lot of traction were, “How far do you need to go before you call a dream impossible?” and “Which factor played the biggest role in the success of Roberto Carlos’ kick: his talent, the practice he put in, the physics of the kick, or something else? Why?”

Next week, Discoverers continue to make progress on their end-of-year visions.
