Growing Minds and Gardens: Learning through Nature in Spark

Small Seeds, Big Discoveries

The beginning of Session 5 introduced Sparks to a focus on gardening, inviting learners to explore the natural world through hands-on experiences and careful observation. As the broader community explores commmunity gardening this session, Sparks are able to engage in connected work that allows ideas, questions, and discoveries to flow naturally between studios..

Sparks began their gardening work by exploring the building blocks of plant life. They learned about the parts of a seed and a plant, discovering how each part supports growth. Learners also explored what plants need to thrive—sunlight, water, soil, and air—while making connections to their own needs for nourishment, water, rest, and care to grow strong.

Their curiosity continued through a capillary action experiment, where Sparks observed how water travels through plants and compared their findings with Explore’s experiment, noticing similarities and differences.

By the end of week two, Sparks prepared and planted their potato tower with help from Explore learners, layering soil and seed potatoes to create a structure that will support upward growth over time.
