Who is responsible for making a learner-driven community work?
This week, Explorers began moving from building the tribe to learning what it means to govern themselves within it.
Through the Contract Game, learners considered a question at the heart of self-government: How many rules are too many, and how few are too few? Rather than receiving a finished Studio Contract from the Guides, Explorers began proposing promises, testing them in daily studio life, and using evidence and a two-thirds vote to decide which ideas deserve to move forward.
That same movement toward ownership showed up in Core Skills. Learners began setting SMART goals, breaking larger badge requirements into concrete next steps and asking Fellow Travelers to check whether their goals were Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Tough.
Writers’ Workshop also began this week with an invitation to experiment. Each Explorer created a poet persona before beginning a portfolio of poems, first exploring voice and then free verse. The emphasis, for now, is not polish. It is drafting, trying, noticing, and discovering what choices belong to the poet.
By Friday, the question of ownership had widened from individual work to the community itself as Explorers were introduced to Town Hall, a weekly forum where learners can bring celebrations or problems, propose solutions, discuss them together, and, when needed, vote.
Little by little, the systems of the studio are becoming theirs.
